▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Murasakibara Atsushi
CANON: Kuroko no Basket
CANON POINT: Prior to LAST GAME!, Winter Cup finals
AGE: 16
BACKGROUND: Read it all here!
PERSONALITY: Murasakibara enjoys doing things the easy way.
He's childish in many ways, but his inclination for shortcuts best showcase this. When it comes food, he prefers lots of snacks as opposed to one big meal since snacks are faster and, usually, tastier. With school, he slacks off because it's less work than applying himself. One of his trademark phrases is, "too much effort," a cop out he uses when he doesn't feel like doing something. He's lazy, choosing to coast along in nearly all aspects of his life.
Right, and he's also nearly seven feet tall.
Beyond his height and weight and size, the first thing someone will learn about Murasakibara is that he's a bit of a man-child. He's stubborn and he can even be whiny at times. Teenagers are expected to be immature, sure, but Murasakibara supersedes immaturity with his petulant ways. He whines, he complains, and he's even been to thrown full-on tantrums over something as frivolous as snack foods before. His eccentricity also comes out in the way he refers to others with the suffix -chin (Kurochin, Akachin, Midochin, etc.), which is a 'cuter' suffix generally used by children, young girls in particular, in place of proper honorifics. Additionally, Murasakibara is rarely seen without a bag of candy in hand. This love of snacks is another nod to his childish ways.
As the title character Kuroko once described him,
"When it comes to everything besides basketball, he's got a screw loose. While he posses great talent in one area, he is incompetent at everything else."
The assessment sounds harsh at first, but his actions back this up. Much like a child, Murasakibara does best as a follower as opposed to a leader. He's most often seen sticking close to someone -- like his captain, Akashi, in middle school, and his new captain, Himuro, in high school -- and having them do all the work for him. In this way, even thinking for himself can be too much effort. Also like a child, he can be easily provoked by challenges. When he first encounters his rival Kagami, he's goaded into playing a game of basketball by essentially being called 'chicken'.
Despite being the one thing he's good at (besides eating snacks and sleeping), Murasakibara frequently claims that basketball gives him no joy and that he does not have a passion for it. He simply plays because he's good at it. Juxtaposing the views of other characters in the show, namely characters like Himuro and Kiyoshi, Atsushi does not believe in the power of hard work and believes that talent is something you simply possess. This is a major theme of the series. Atsushi openly disapproves of those who work hard to better themselves as he sees this as pointless. His hatred of hard work of the few things he's seen becoming emotional about. When confronted with faith in hard work, he grows particularly heated and says:
"All these things you guys seek: hard work, guts, faith. I'll crush them all. Everything."
Afterwards, in an act of sadism, Murasakibara challenged his opponents with the full strength of his power. He did this only to prove to them how ineffective they are. This desire to 'crush' only comes out on the court when his opponents are too hopeful about their position.
Maybe it's a good thing he limits this mentality to the basketball court.
After all, with his size and power alone, it would be pretty easy for him to hurt someone if he wasn't careful. But he is. He's consistently aware of his height and aware of the ways it affects those around him. On the court, he finds himself limiting his power since going out all could ( and has ) cause him to literally topple those in his path. He keeps himself in check and chooses to play defense, not only because it's easier, but because there's a lesser chance of hurting others. Outside of basketball, he still holds himself in something of a reserved manner, never one to horse around or act in a way that could even accidentally harm others.
As much as Atsushi claims to despise basketball, after losing an important match to those who felt were beneath him, he breaks down in tears, proving that he has more love for the sport than he'd like to admit.
Outside of basketball, however, he's a giant baby.
This childishness likely comes from being raised as the youngest of five children and being the 'baby' at home.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Like most character in Kuroko no Basket, Murasakibara has law-defying abilities on the basketball court. But only when it comes to basketball. He's just a normal, really tall dude any other time.
INVENTORY: Pocky sticks, monja umaibo, honey buns, gummi worms...
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
